What's in This Guide
1. The Realistic Numbers
of high school girls volleyball players play in college. This is a women's sport at the NCAA level (men's volleyball has only 23 D1 programs). There are 450,000+ girls playing HS volleyball and roughly 17,500 playing NCAA volleyball.
| Division | % of HS Players | # of Programs | Scholarships |
|---|---|---|---|
| D1 Women's | ~1.4% | 340 | 12 (equivalency) |
| D2 Women's | ~1.2% | ~300 | 8 (equivalency) |
| D3 Women's | ~1.3% | ~430 | 0 athletic |
| NAIA | ~0.8% | ~230 | 8 |
| D1 Men's | Tiny % | 23 D1 + 27 D2 | 4.5 (equivalency) |
Men's D1 volleyball has only 23 programs, making it one of the hardest sports to play at the D1 level. Men's D2 has 27 programs. If your son wants to play college volleyball, consider D3, NAIA, and club programs — the options are limited at D1/D2.
2. The Recruiting Timeline
7th-8th Grade
Join the best club volleyball team available. Start playing in USAV regional events. Focus on position-specific development. No recruiting contact allowed — but coaches track results from JVA and USAV events.
Freshman Year
Play varsity high school volleyball. Continue club season. Start building a highlight video with game footage. Begin researching target schools and attending college camps.
Sophomore Year
NCAA contact begins June 15 after sophomore year. Start emailing coaches with video. Attend college prospect camps at target schools. If your club team qualifies for USAV Nationals (Open or National division), this is critical recruiting exposure.
Junior Year — PEAK RECRUITING
Most D1 verbal commitments happen by end of junior year. USAV Nationals and AAU Nationals are the biggest recruiting events. Official visits. Continue college camp circuit. Be prepared for quick decisions — the volleyball recruiting timeline moves fast.
Senior Year
Early signing period (November). Late signing period (April). D2, D3, and NAIA programs continue recruiting. Transfer portal creates late opportunities.
3. Events That Matter
- USAV Girls Junior National Championship — THE volleyball recruiting event. 2,600+ teams. Indianapolis. Every D1 coach attends. Open and National divisions are priority for D1 recruiting.
- AAU Volleyball Nationals — The world's largest volleyball tournament. Orlando. Good D2/D3 exposure; moderate D1 attendance in older age groups.
- JVA World Challenge — Strong spring event. Louisville. Solid D1/D2 coach attendance.
- Triple Crown NIT — Denver. Good exposure for non-Power 5 D1 and D2 programs.
- College prospect camps — $75-200 per camp. Direct evaluation by the coaching staff you want to play for. Often the best ROI.
4. Position Requirements
Volleyball is a height-dependent sport at the college level, particularly for front-row positions.
| Position | D1 Power 5 | D1 Mid-Major | D2 | D3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Outside Hitter | 6'0"-6'4" | 5'10"-6'2" | 5'9"-6'0" | 5'7"-5'11" |
| Middle Blocker | 6'1"-6'5" | 5'11"-6'3" | 5'10"-6'1" | 5'9"-6'0" |
| Setter | 5'10"-6'2" | 5'8"-6'0" | 5'7"-5'10" | 5'5"-5'9" |
| Libero/DS | 5'5"-5'9" | 5'4"-5'8" | 5'3"-5'7" | 5'2"-5'6" |
| Right Side | 6'0"-6'4" | 5'10"-6'2" | 5'9"-6'0" | 5'8"-5'11" |
Athletic Benchmarks
- Standing reach + approach jump: D1 outside hitters typically need 10'+ reach on approach. D1 middles: 10'2"+.
- Standing vert: D1: 8-10" standing, 18-22" approach jump. Elite programs want 10"+ standing vert.
- Lateral speed: First-step quickness is critical for defense and blocking. Timed agility drills matter at combines.
5. How to Get Noticed
- Play on a nationally competitive club team. Club volleyball drives recruiting more than high school. Coaches attend USAV-sanctioned events and know which clubs develop talent.
- Video (3-5 min): Full match points, not just kills. Show serve receive, defensive plays, transition offense, and communication. Include measurables on screen (height, standing reach, approach touch).
- Email coaches with specific interest: Brief email with video link, club team name, upcoming tournament schedule, measurables, and why you're interested in their program specifically.
- College camps (top ROI): $75-200 per camp. Coaches evaluate you directly, give feedback, and remember you. Attend camps at 5-8 target schools.
6. What Parents Should Know
- Club volleyball is expensive — $3,000-8,000/year depending on level and travel. The top "national qualifier" teams travel the most and cost the most.
- USAV Nationals is worth the investment. If your daughter's team qualifies for Open or National division, prioritize this over everything else. The D1 exposure is unmatched.
- Libero is a viable college path for smaller, athletic players. Don't assume your daughter needs to be 6'0" to play college volleyball. The libero position creates opportunities for skilled players under 5'7".
- Don't over-specialize too early. Many college coaches prefer multi-sport athletes at the underclass level. A sophomore who also runs track or plays basketball often has a higher athletic ceiling than a volleyball-only player.
7. Financial Reality
scholarships per D1 women's volleyball program, split among rosters of 16-18 players. The math is better than most equivalency sports — average scholarship covers ~65-75% of costs.
- Volleyball's scholarship ratio is relatively favorable. With 12 scholarships for 16-18 players, the average scholarship is larger than baseball, soccer, or lacrosse. Many D1 volleyball players receive 75-100% scholarships.
- D2: 8 scholarships among ~14-16 players. Average covers ~50-60% of costs.
- D3: No athletic scholarships. Academic and need-based aid varies widely.
8. Red Flags
- 🚩 Club teams that claim "all of our players get D1 scholarships." Ask for specific data — names, schools, division levels. Most clubs stretch these numbers considerably.
- 🚩 Showcase events charging $400+ per player with no USAV sanction. USAV-sanctioned events carry weight with coaches. Unsanctioned events may draw fewer coaches.
- 🚩 Private volleyball trainers promising position changes to make your daughter more "recruitable." Position development should be driven by your club coach and college interest, not a paid trainer.
- 🚩 Any program that says your daughter is too short to play college volleyball at any level. Libero and DS opportunities exist at every level for skilled athletes.
