Softball College
Recruiting Guide

PGF vs. Alliance, early commitment culture, pitching speed benchmarks, and the real scholarship picture.

1. The Realistic Numbers

5.7%

of high school softball players go on to play NCAA softball. There are ~360,000 HS softball players and roughly 20,500 playing NCAA softball across all divisions.

Division % of HS Players # of Programs Scholarships
D1 ~1.8% ~300 12 (equivalency)
D2 ~1.5% ~285 7.2 (equivalency)
D3 ~2.4% ~410 0 athletic
NAIA ~1.2% ~240 10

2. The Recruiting Timeline

Softball has historically had one of the earliest commitment cultures in college sports. NCAA reforms have pushed timelines later, but the sport remains fast-moving.

8th Grade

Play on the best 14U travel team available. Start attending PGF or Alliance qualifier events. Develop pitching mechanics (if pitcher) or positional skills. Build a skills video. Coaches cannot contact you yet — but they're building their early watch lists.

Freshman Year

Play high school varsity if ready. Continue travel ball at the highest level. Attend 1-2 college prospect camps. NCAA contact restrictions apply — no calls or texts from coaches until June 15 after sophomore year.

Sophomore Year — CRITICAL

June 15 opens contact. This is when top D1 programs begin actively reaching out. Have your target school list ready. Attend PGF/Alliance national events on the best team possible. Prospect camps at 5-8 target schools. Many verbal commits happen during or immediately after the 16U summer season.

Junior Year

Official visits (max 5 D1). Remaining D1 commitments and D2/D3 recruiting ramps up. PGF/Alliance Nationals at 18U is peak scouting. Follow up with all interested programs. High school season performance matters.

Senior Year

NLI signing. D2, D3, NAIA recruiting continues. Transfer portal creates late opportunities even at D1.

The early commitment reality:

Despite NCAA rules designed to slow early commitments, softball culture still pushes faster than other sports. Top D1 pitchers may receive verbal offers within weeks of the June 15 contact date after sophomore year. This creates pressure — but don't let urgency override fit. There are excellent programs at every division level, and rushing a commitment often leads to transfers.

3. Events That Matter

  • PGF Nationals — The premier softball tournament. Orange County, CA. Every D1 coach attends. $1,200-1,800/team. If your team qualifies for Premier, this is #1 priority.
  • PGF Premier 18U National Championship — The top 96 18U teams. Peak recruiting event. Irvine, CA.
  • Alliance Fastpitch National Championship — Second-largest elite championship. Rapidly growing in coach attendance. $1,100-1,500/team.
  • USA Softball Gold National Championship — Official USA Softball championship. OKC Hall of Fame Complex. Heavy D1 presence. $800-1,200/team.
  • College prospect camps — $75-200. Direct evaluation by target school coaching staff. The single best ROI for targeted recruiting.

4. Skill Benchmarks

Pitchers

Level Pitching Speed Movement Pitches Other
Power 5 D1 65-72+ mph 3+ pitches with command Spin rate, deception, composure
Mid-Major D1 60-67 mph 2-3 reliable pitches Strike-throwing ability, change of speeds
D2 57-64 mph 2 reliable pitches Consistency, ability to hit spots
D3 54-62 mph 1-2 movement pitches Competitiveness, control

Position Players

Level Home-to-1B Exit Velocity Overhand Throw
Power 5 D1 2.7-2.9 sec 70+ mph 60+ mph (OF), 55+ mph (IF)
Mid-Major D1 2.8-3.0 sec 62-70 mph 55-60 mph (OF), 52-58 mph (IF)
D2 2.9-3.1 sec 58-65 mph 52-58 mph (OF), 48-55 mph (IF)
D3 3.0-3.3 sec 52-60 mph 48-55 mph (OF), 45-52 mph (IF)

Catchers (Additional)

  • Pop time (2B throw): D1: 1.70-1.85 sec | D2: 1.80-1.95 sec | D3: 1.90-2.05 sec
  • Blocking and framing are increasingly valued. Coaches want catchers who can manage a pitching staff and call games.

5. How to Get Noticed

  • Play on a nationally ranked travel team. PGF and Alliance Premier-level teams get automatic coach attention. The team name on your jersey matters in softball recruiting.
  • Pitchers: Your speed gun is your resume. Coaches track velocity first, movement second, command third. Get your speed accurately measured at a reputable event.
  • Skills video: Pitchers: 5-10 full-speed pitches from multiple angles, plus game at-bats against. Position players: game at-bats, defensive plays, arm strength measurement. No music.
  • College prospect camps: The best ROI in softball recruiting. Coaches evaluate you directly and give feedback. Attend 5-8 target school camps.

6. What Parents Should Know

  • Don't rush the commitment. Softball culture pressures early verbals. But fit matters — the transfer rate in college softball is high, often because players committed too early to programs that weren't right for them.
  • Pitcher specialization vs. dual-threat: At the college level, most programs want players who can either pitch OR play a position. True dual-threats are rare. Focus on your daughter's strongest path.
  • High school softball matters — D1 coaches watch HS state tournaments and track all-state selections. Don't skip HS season for travel ball exclusively.
  • The club team drives recruiting. PGF and Alliance qualification is the gateway to national exposure. Budget for a team that qualifies for top-tier national events.

7. Financial Reality

12

scholarships per D1 softball program, split among rosters of 20-22 players. The ratio is relatively favorable — average D1 softball scholarship covers ~55-65% of costs.

  • Pitchers get the biggest scholarships. Elite D1 pitchers often receive 80-100% scholarships. Position players average 40-60%. This is the sport where pitching velocity most directly translates to scholarship dollars.
  • D2: 7.2 scholarships among ~18 players. Average covers 40-50% of costs.
  • D3: No athletic money. Academic and need-based aid varies.

8. Red Flags

  • 🚩 Private pitching coaches who guarantee D1 velocity. Velocity development has genetic components. Good coaching helps, but no trainer can guarantee 65+ mph.
  • 🚩 Travel teams that charge $8,000+/year and don't qualify for PGF or Alliance Nationals. If you're paying premium prices, the team should be competing at the national level.
  • 🚩 Coaches who pressure verbal commitments within days of first contact. Legitimate programs give families time to make informed decisions. Rushing is a red flag.
  • 🚩 Showcase events that mix 12U and 18U with claims of "D1 coaches watching all fields." D1 coaches attend for 16U Premier and 18U Premier. They're not scouting 12U games.
