Team Fundraising That
Actually Works

Car washes raise $200 and take an entire Saturday. Here's what actually moves the needle — and what's a waste of everyone's time.

Travel sports are expensive. Between tournament fees, uniforms, travel costs, and equipment, a typical family can spend $2,000–$5,000 per season. Fundraising helps — but only if it actually raises money. Let's separate what works from what doesn't.

Set a Real Goal (With Math)

  • Start with the budget gap. Total season costs minus total dues collected = what you need to raise. If the gap is $3,000, that's your goal. Not "$5,000 because it sounds ambitious."
  • Calculate per-family impact. "$3,000 raised means $200 less per family" is more motivating than "$3,000 goal." Make it personal.
  • Set a timeline. "We need to raise $3,000 by March 1" creates urgency. Open-ended goals die slowly.

What Actually Raises Money

🏆 Tier 1: High Return, Low Effort

  • Direct sponsorships from local businesses. A local chiropractor, sports shop, or restaurant will often sponsor a team for $500–$2,000 in exchange for logo placement on jerseys, banners, or social media. One email can generate more than a month of car washes.
  • Online fundraising platforms. GoFundMe, Snap! Raise, or team-specific platforms. They extend reach beyond your immediate community. Share on social media and let the network effect work.
  • Spirit wear sales. Custom team merchandise (hoodies, hats, bags) with a 30-40% margin. Use a print-on-demand service so there's no upfront inventory cost.

🥈 Tier 2: Moderate Return

  • Restaurant partnership nights. "Dine at [Restaurant] on Tuesday and 15% goes to the team." Low effort, moderate return ($200-500). Good for community building.
  • Themed events. Trivia nights, silent auctions, or a parent-vs-kids game night. These raise money AND build team culture. Budget $200-500 net after expenses.
  • Coaching clinics. If your coach is willing, a paid clinic for younger players in the community can raise $500-1,000 while giving back.

🥉 Tier 3: Time Sinks (Usually)

  • Car washes. Fun for the kids, brutal for the adults, and typically raise $150-300 for 6 hours of work. The ROI is terrible. Do it for team bonding, not revenue.
  • Candy/cookie/popcorn sales. Parents end up buying most of it themselves. Net contribution after deducting product cost is minimal.
  • Wrapping paper / catalog sales. It's 1997 calling. These generate eye rolls, not revenue.

  • Report fundraising totals publicly. "We raised $1,500 at the golf tournament!" Transparency motivates continued support.
  • Show where the money goes. "Fundraising covered 100% of our tournament registration fees" connects effort to outcome.
