How Much Does Club
Volleyball Cost?

From $1,500 at local club to $18,000+ at national-qualifier programs. Convention center parking alone will make you rethink your budget.

Total Cost of Ownership

Club volleyball has a compressed but intense season (January–June) that packs an enormous amount of spending into 5–6 months. The convention center tournament culture — where you play 5–8 matches in a weekend inside massive expo halls — creates a distinct cost pattern unlike any other sport.

Level Annual Range What It Includes
Local Club $1,000 – $2,500 Local/regional tournaments, basic gym time, minimal travel
Competitive / Regional $2,500 – $6,000 Regional qualifiers, quality coaching, overnight tournaments
National / Elite $6,000 – $18,000+ National qualifiers, USAV Nationals, cross-country travel, private training

The compressed season trap: Since club season is only 5–6 months, parents sometimes underestimate costs. But $6,000 over 5 months is $1,200/month — higher than many sports' monthly rate across a year-round season.

The Hidden Costs Nobody Mentions

  • Convention center parking — $20–$40/day × 12–15 tournament days = $240–$600/year. This is the #1 cost parents forget to budget.
  • Convention center food — $12 hot dogs and $8 bottled water. Pack a cooler or budget $15–$25/person/day.
  • Shoe replacement — Volleyball shoes on gym floors wear fast. $80–$150 every 4–5 months for serious players.
  • "Optional" beach season — Coaches strongly recommend beach volleyball for skills development. It has its own cost structure: $300–$1,500.
  • Tryout season stress costs — Club tryouts happen in October/November. Top players try out at 2–3 clubs. Each charges $25–$50 in tryout fees.
  • Video subscriptions — Hudl or Game Changer for film. Team subscriptions: $100–$300.
  • Nationals week expenses — If your team qualifies for USAV Nationals, add $2,000–$4,000 for that single week (flights, 5–7 nights hotel, food, tickets).
  • Libero practice jersey — Most clubs charge extra for the libero-specific jersey. $20–$40.

The Scholarship Reality

  • D1 Women's Volleyball: 12 scholarships per 16-player roster ≈ 75% coverage. This is one of the BEST scholarship-to-roster ratios in college sports.
  • D1 Men's Volleyball: 4.5 scholarships per roster. Very limited programs (only ~23 D1 teams).
  • Percentage who play D1: 3.3% of high school players (women).

Good news: Women's volleyball has one of the most favorable scholarship situations in college sports. If your daughter reaches D1, the average scholarship covers approximately $37,500/year at a school costing $50K. The total 4-year value of $150K significantly outweighs a typical $40K–$50K investment in club volleyball.

The reality check: Only 3.3% of high school players reach D1. D2 offers 8 scholarships per team. D3 offers none but has strong academic aid. The best ROI strategy is targeting the right fit across all divisions.
