How Much Does Travel
Lacrosse Cost?

From $2,200 at local clubs to $25,000+ at elite national programs. The fastest-growing sport — with the fastest-growing price tag.

Total Cost of Ownership

Lacrosse has exploded in popularity over the past decade, and costs have escalated alongside its growth. The sport combines the equipment costs of hockey with the travel demands of baseball/soccer, creating a uniquely expensive combination — especially for boys' lacrosse where full protective gear is required.

Competitive Club $3,500 – $9,000 Regional/national tournaments, quality coaching, showcase events

The Hidden Costs Nobody Mentions

  • Head replacement and restringing — Lacrosse heads crack. Mesh wears out. Budget $50–$150 per restring and $50–$100 for replacement heads, 2–3× per year.
  • Box lacrosse (winter season) — Many competitive players play box lacrosse indoors during winter. Add $500–$1,500 for a second season.
  • Geographic disparity — If you don't live in MD, NY, NJ, CT, or MA, you'll travel farther and more often to reach quality competition. This adds $1,000–$3,000.
  • Position-specific equipment (goalie) — Goalie sticks ($100–$200), chest protector ($200–$400), extra padding. GK gear adds $500+ annually.
  • Wall ball rebounders — Serious players need a rebounder or practice wall for stick work. $100–$300.
  • Recruiting video production — Professional highlight films: $200–$500. Essential at 16U+.
  • Fall ball programs — Many clubs offer a fall season that's technically "optional" but functionally required for roster placement.

The Scholarship Reality

  • D1 Men's Lacrosse: 12.6 scholarships per 48-player roster ≈ 26% coverage. Only 2.9% of HS players reach D1.
  • D1 Women's Lacrosse: 12 scholarships per 28-player roster ≈ 43% coverage. Better ratio but still highly competitive.
  • D3 is the sweet spot: D3 lacrosse programs are numerous (especially in the NE) and don't offer athletic scholarships — but strong academic aid packages often fill the gap. Many excellent lacrosse families target D3 specifically.

The math: $7,000/year × 8 years = $56,000. Average D1 men's lacrosse scholarship ≈ $13,800/year ($55,200 over 4 years). Near-breakeven — but only for the top 3% of players.
