The Spring Crunch Is Real
Spring is when travel sports goes from "manageable hobby" to "full-time second job." You're juggling school activities, end-of-year events, and a tournament schedule that looks like it was designed by someone who hates parents. Here's how to handle it.
Build a Family Calendar — One Calendar
- Merge everything. Club schedule, school events, sibling activities — if it's not on one shared calendar, conflicts will blindside you.
- Block out recovery weekends. Intentionally leave at least one weekend per month tournament-free. Your family needs it.
- Communicate with coaches early. If you know you'll miss a tournament, say so in February, not the week before.
Weather Contingency Planning
- Always check the 10-day forecast before booking non-refundable hotels.
- Pack for every condition. Spring means 40°F mornings and 75°F afternoons in the same day.
- Know the tournament's rain policy. Some compress schedules, some cancel, some play through everything.

- Prep on Thursday. Cut fruit, make sandwiches, freeze water bottles. Saturday morning you'll thank yourself.
- Use a dedicated cooler. Gas station food for every meal is expensive and makes everyone sluggish.
- Plan one real team dinner. It's good for morale and gives parents a chance to decompress together.
Surviving the Drive
- Audiobooks and podcasts beat screen time for long drives. (The Sideline Podcast is a good start.)
- Rotate driving duties if carpooling. The same parent shouldn't drive every weekend.
- Leave 30 minutes earlier than you think you need to. Every experienced parent learns this the hard way.
